OCDSBXL Hosts Women in Trades 2019 at OTSS

A large group of girls who participated in the skilled trades day.

Women in Trades 2019 took place last week at the OCDSB’s Ottawa Technical Secondary School.  The event was attended by approximately 200 grade 7 and grade 8 girls from schools across the Ottawa-Carleton District.

The success of the Women in Trades event involved many key factors.  The first being the incredible staff at the OTSS who welcomed us into their school, accommodated us with their shops and facilities, and supported us with student aides and teachers.

The Women in Trades Day would not have been the same without the inspirational keynote speech of Jamie McMillan, founder of “Kick Ass Careers,” an ironworker and boilermaker by trade, who also sits on a Ministerial Advisory Committee to the Prime Minister.

With the support of an incredible network of Industry Partners in Education, this day of “the Trades” became an opportunity to ground education in a community setting, and have the learning come directly from industry-leading experts in their respective fields. The incredible Women Tradespeople who put on workshops in auto-mechanics, carpentry, GPS surveying, Virtual Reality MIG-welding, Electrical circuitry, Barber technique and tradecraft,  Dessert preparation, Bricklaying, and Sculptural restoration were truly amazing individuals. Their work with our students, mentoring girls in skills on tools and also, on the options that exist for them in careers and in life, made for a very rewarding experience for everyone involved.

OCDSBXL would like to recognize our Industry Partners in Education for their commitment to this initiative and their generous donations of time, materials, expertise, and often even more:
